Our chickens.
This is actually a really funny story. You see, most people don't know this about Kyle, but he has wanted to have chickens since before we were even married. And for those of you who know me really well, well you know about my anti pet, anti animals even being close up to me mind frame. See, funny huh. I went along with Kyle's chicken idea thinking that this too would pass or that maybe, just maybe he would forget about it. Um, no. He would remind me ALL of the time that when we got a place of our own we were going to get some chickens.
Fast forward to now.
We have a place of our own (post coming soon) with plenty of room for a lot of things. Kyle decided what kind of chickens he wanted and when we went to go buy them from the store we were told that they were out, actually all of the IFA stores were out. Yes, we checked. After all, these were the kind of chickens that everybody else wanted too. Ah shucks, I though to myself, I guess we will have to wait until next year to get some.
Not so.
So, our chickens lived in a box in our garage for the first week of their lives. That only lasted for a week though because their wings came in and they were starting too fly; as in, almost out of the box. So then Kyle put them in our basement window well. You know, to give them more room and to give Kyle more time to finish the OTHER projects that come before building a chicken coop. Oh, And McKayla and I are instructed daily that it was our job to check on them during the day to make sure that they were still alive. And, here I was thinking that I wouldn't have to do anything with them.
Wrong again.
There was a day last week that was almost fatal for Tom, Dick and Harry. You see, the one day that I decide that I am tired of checking on the chickens is the one day that the light in the heat lamp explodes and the chickens are in the window well- yes it is covered- fending for themselves, huddled up on top of each other trying to keep warm, during one of our many snowstorms. Nice. I call Kyle, he is in a panic and I am told that I have to actually pick them up, put them in their old box and keep them in the kitchen so they can warm up.
Insert coughing, gagging and looks of disgust here.
Now that are doing fine. Kyle isn't so paranoid. And McKayla thinks that they are fun. So I guess we, and the chickens are all good.
